How to Improve your Mental Health this Autumn and Winter

Self Care

We all know autumn and winter can be tough, with the days getting darker and the weather colder. It’s important to find ways to stay well, both physically and mentally, during these months. I’m usually a motivated person, but when my anxiety worsens, it can be hard to get things done. Here are some ways that help me during this time:

Make a Schedule

Schedules keep me accountable. Last Friday, I started writing down one thing I want to do each day, no matter how small. It could be something as simple as a 5-minute walk. Putting it in a diary helps me remember and keeps me motivated.

Use the 5-Minute Rule

If there’s a task you’ve been putting off, commit to doing it for 5 minutes. After that, you can decide whether to carry on or stop. It’s a great way to get started.

Join a Class or Group

If you want to learn something new or pick up a hobby, try joining a class or group. While online options are convenient, face-to-face interactions are great for social connections. They can also help combat loneliness. If in-person isn’t possible, there are plenty of online courses too.

Exercise

Autumn is a beautiful time to be outside, with the leaves falling and nature preparing for spring. Walking is my favourite, but any kind of movement helps, whether it’s household chores or a local spinning class. Many areas even have free outdoor gyms now, and I love walking around town, popping into my favourite shops—it’s exercise without feeling like it!

Volunteering

Volunteering is a fantastic way to help yourself while helping others. Along with writing articles for Turn2Me, I’ve recently started volunteering with Tidy Towns and an animal rescue as a dog walker. Animals are a great comfort for anyone with anxiety, and this has helped me immensely, both mentally and physically.

Look Forward to Winter Events

Whether it’s sitting by the fire with a hot chocolate, or celebrating Halloween, Christmas, or Easter, there’s always something to look forward to. For me, it’s the Barmbrack at Halloween, the festivities of Christmas, and the joy of Easter. What are your favourite things about winter?

I hope these tips help as we move from summer to autumn and winter. And remember: “What good is the warmth of summer, without the cold of winter to give it sweetness.” – John Steinbeck.
