International Day of Families: A Time to Acknowledge How Families Shape Our Mental Health

As the world marks International Day of Families on the 15th May, national mental health charity Turn2Me is highlighting how family dynamics can profoundly affect our mental wellbeing – for better or worse. While families can offer love, support, and stability, they can also be a significant source of stress, particularly when relationships are toxic, strained, or emotionally challenging.

“Families are often the cornerstone of our emotional development and mental health, but not every family relationship is a healthy one,” said Fiona O’Malley, CEO of Turn2Me. “On this day, we want to acknowledge both the importance of family support—and the reality that many people find family life deeply stressful or even harmful to their wellbeing.”

The International Day of Families, recognised annually by the United Nations, serves as a reminder to reflect on the impact that family environments have on health, education, and development. Turn2Me notes that strained family ties, unresolved conflicts, and constant criticism can contribute to anxiety, low self-esteem, and even depression.

Tips for Managing Toxic Family Relationships:

  • Set Boundaries Without Guilt
Define what behaviour you will and won’t accept. This could mean limiting phone calls, declining certain invitations, or steering clear of topics that trigger conflict.
  • Protect Your Mental Space
Practice mindfulness or grounding techniques before and after difficult interactions to stay calm and emotionally regulated.
  • Don’t Take It Personally
Toxic family members often project their own unresolved issues. Try not to internalise their negativity or blame yourself for their behaviour.
  • Choose Communication Wisely
Decide if and when conversations are productive. In some cases, keeping things polite but distant may be the healthiest approach.
  • Prioritise Self-Care
Surround yourself with supportive friends, engage in activities you enjoy, and seek out emotional support when you need it.

Turn2Me is reminding people that they are not alone. The charity offers up to six free counselling sessions and free, professionally moderated online support groups on topics like depression, grief, anxiety, and relationship issues – all accessible from the comfort of your own home.
